"Up In The Air" - Movie Review

By Merian Redman

This movie took me by surprise. I watched a few trailers on this movie and had missed the part where you find out what George does for a living.

He works for a company who is hired by other companies to come in and fire their employees! They even go so far as to accomplish this via computer! I work in Flint, Michigan...this struck a vital cord.

I, like many others in this area are working day-to-day. I keep my personal effects small, when the day happens I want to be able to leave with a small box of my belongings. Oh yeah, back to the movie review...

There is romance, a story, a lesson and a some laughs..I recommend it theater or video.

P.S. If you just lost your job…wait for a while…

I ended up out of work twice last year, the first time the company just dropped 60 employees with no notice. This is the second time it happened to me, and it's soul destroying when you are let to believe that a company actually cares about it's workforce.

Sounds like a good movie though, George Clooney usually plays a good role.

Flint, or anywhere else close to Detroit isn't good these days for jobs I am sure, with many of the automobile manufacturers struggling to survive.

I saw this movie over the holidays even though I knew what it was about. I'm an independent contractor (a Realtor) so I'm always looking for work and there are stretches when I'm not involved in a real estate transaction so I need the money I made from the last one to tide me over.

But back to the review.

It was cute in some places and poignant in others. What I thought was interesting was the gender role reversal between the George Clooney's character's love interest ("Alex") and the George Clooney character. Here, "Alex", was in the affair with a family back home and just using the George Clooney character for sex and fun. When George finds out, he is devastated. Usually, it's the man who is the user and the woman who "falls in love". I thought it was an interesting twist.

All in all, I thought it was a decent movie. Thought provoking. Yes, a little depressing. Not a "happy" ending.

Many are fearful with the economy as it is.
I wish you all the best.
