Growing Amaryllis Indoors
By Merian Redman
Flowers Flowering at Christmas - My 3 Amigos I began this project on November 20, 2009, when I received (complete surprise) 3 complimentary bulbs, Amaryllis, from my last minute plant order of creeping flox. It was a good deal on the flox and thought I would take a chance and cast $20 to the wind. I did some research and here is what I did for my 3 amigos- 1st plant bulbs with top end sticking out. This is important to not plant the bulbs too deep. I watered once a week. When the blossoms appeared I watered more, the soil seemed to dry out faster. Once the plants have run their cycle and begin to die, you remove the bulbs from the dirt and put them in a dark and dry place. After they have rested about 3 months, bring them out and repeat. As for the creeping flox, they did make it in the ground outside before the freeze. We have to wait for spring to see if they survived my race with Mother Nature.

They were in full bloom during the holidays!

I always thought that once Amaryllis bloomed and died, that was it. I'm glad to know they will re-grow. Learn something new every day.

Thank you for the comment. I have never grown indoor flowering plants so I will be surprised to take these bulbs and do this again. I am going to store them in the attic until end of March and try to grow them again.
I have always found that Amerylys will do very well if left alone. I have two excellent specimens on my balcony that produce three to five blooms each , each year, and they have never been disturbed. Possibly the pot you have them in is too small for them? They soon become root-bound in such small pots - I plant no more than two bulbs in a 3 gallon tub with some small ground cover plants for year round interest.
A fine intel, Merian. We do a lot of gardening and you just gave us some useful information. Thanks for sharing. Frederick
